Neuroaesthetics: The Science of Beauty and Well-Being

Writer's picture: Joké DurojaiyeJoké Durojaiye

Have you ever walked into a room and instantly felt calmer or more energized without knowing why? That’s neuroaesthetics at work. The word Neuroaesthetics might sound scientific, but it’s really simple—it’s the study of how our brains respond to beauty and design.

The way a space makes us feel is not an accident. It’s influenced by colors, lighting, textures, shapes, and even patterns found in nature (known as fractals). Research shows that thoughtful design doesn’t just boost our mood—it can promote healing. In fact, some experts believe that architects and designers have a greater impact on public health than medicine.

A Personal Story of Design and Healing

I experienced the power of neuroaesthetics firsthand when I lost a very dear friend. In In her final days, her husband asked me to help redecorate their bedroom where she was receiving hospice care.

This wasn’t just another project—it was personal, and I knew it had to be meaningful. I reached out to a hospice care expert, who simply said: “Bring in nature and texture.”

I’ll never forget placing the softest, most luxe feeling blanket on her and her favorite white hydrangeas in the room as part of the decorating. For the first time in days, she made eye contact—there was a momentary flicker in her eyes, signailing a quiet recognition. It was as if, in that small moment, the space had given her a sense of comfort and connection. The short but powerful sign of emotion and a moment of a sign of life was the balm our souls desperately needed to know that she was there with us even if it was in a blink.

Decorate With Small Changes, To Make A Big Impact

Even small changes can make a big difference. Adding greenery—like snake plants or peace lilies—not only enhances beauty but also improves air quality and reduces stress. A thoughtfully placed rug, a burst of natural light, or the right color palette can shift the entire mood of a room.

How To Decorate For Well-Being Using Design Psychology

Now that you know how design impacts your mood, let’s talk about how to create stress-free environments that support your mental health:

  1. Define the Purpose: Start by thinking about how you want to feel in a space. Whether it’s a room for relaxation, productivity, or socializing, let the purpose guide your design choices.

  2. Use Color Strategically: Incorporate colors that align with the mood you want to create. Use calming tones in bedrooms and more vibrant colors in areas where you want to feel energized, like your home office.

  3. Maximize Natural Light: Wherever possible, maximize natural light. If you’re working with a space that doesn’t have much natural light, consider using lighting that mimics daylight or strategically placing mirrors to reflect light around the room.

  4. Mix Textures for Comfort: Combine different textures to create a visually interesting and comfortable space. A mix of wood, metal, and soft fabrics can make a room feel warm and inviting.

  5. A cluttered space is a cluttered mind: Keep your space organized and only display items that bring you joy or serve a purpose. Decluttering is one of the most effective ways to create a stress-free environment.

Whether you’re revamping your own home or staging properties for sale, remember that good design isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about creating spaces that make you feel good. With the right approach, you can unlock the power of beautiful design to enhance your mood, reduce stress, and boost your happiness every day.
